Tass Reports Soviet Military On Alert Over Gulf War
MOSCOW (AP) _ Armed forces in the southern Soviet Union were put on high alert early Thursday following the outbreak of war in the Persian Gulf, Tass reported.
The official Soviet news agency quoted the chief of the army’s general staff, Mikhail Moiseyev, as saying ″we are watching closely the development of the situation in the Middle East.″
The fighting in the gulf was ″a tragedy for the people of Iraq and the entire Arab East,″ Moiseyev was quoted as saying.
Tass paraphrased Moiseyev as saying he regretted that it had proved impossible to resolved the conflict peacefully.
