President Screens ’61 ′ with Maris
WASHINGTON (AP) _ President Bush was playing host Monday for a screening of the HBO film ″61 ,″ about the race 40 years ago between Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris to break Babe Ruth’s home run record.
Mantle’s widow, Merlyn, and Maris’ widow, Pat, were among more than three-dozen guests attending the event at the White House. So were Billy Crystal, who directed the film, and Sen. Zell Miller, D-Ga., a friend of Mantle.
The film chronicles the contest in 1961 between fellow New York Yankees Maris and Mantle to surpass Ruth’s mark.
Maris broke the record in a 162-game season _ eight games longer than the season when Ruth hit 60 home runs _ and the baseball commissioner at the time ordered the asterisk to note the difference. The record is now 70, set by Mark McGwire two years ago.
