Jones Talking With American U.

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Former Virginia coach Jeff Jones on Tuesday interviewed for the men’s basketball coaching job at American University.

Jones, who spent last season as an assistant at Rhode Island, was the first of four coaches being brought in to interview for the job.

``The talks have been informative from my perspective, and I hope that it has been informative from the school’s perspective as well,″ Jones said.

The Eagles coach Art Perry in March after going 27-58 the past three seasons. Jones’s visit coincides with the intensified speculation that American could be leaving the Colonial Athletic Association to join the Patriot League.

Jones said the possibility of a conference change did not change his interest in the job.

Other candidates include Connecticut assistant Karl Hobbs, South Carolina State coach Cy Alexander and Winthrop coach Gregg Marshall.
