October 30, 2013

TOKYO (AP) — Takayuki Terauchi drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday as the Yomiuri Giants beat the Rakuten Eagles 6-5 to even the best-of-seven Japan Series at two games each.

Terauchi’s single to right at Tokyo Dome off reliever Kohei Hasebe scored the runner from second.

“That was clutch hitting by Terauchi,” Yomiuri manager Tatsunori Hara said. “We got good production out of our batters today and that was the difference.”

Scott Mathieson picked up the win after taking the mound in the seventh and pitching two scoreless innings of relief.

Andruw Jones gave the Eagles an early lead with a three-run homer in the first inning and Rakuten widened the lead to 4-1 in the second.

The Giants staged a comeback led by Hisayoshi Chono, who drove in a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to give Yomiuri a 5-4 lead.

Eagles captain Kazuo Matsui singled to lead off the top of the sixth and scored on Ryo Hijirisawa’s one-out double to tie it 5.

Lefty Tetsuya Yamaguchi pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
