Medical examiner rules death of 1-year-old killed by car in Orange Village driveway ruled an accident

ORANGE VILLAGE, Ohio — Officials released the identity of a 1-year-old boy killed Monday by a car in the driveway of an Orange Village home.

Bryce Frederick Curtis-Simmons suffered blunt force injuries to the head with skull and brain injuries during the incident that happened just before 8:30 p.m. on Pike Drive near Brainard Road, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office and police.

The medical examiner ruled Bryce’s death an accident.

The case is being forwarded to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office which will determine whether to file criminal charges in the case, Orange Village police said.

Officers found the toddler’s mother running down the street in a panic when they responded to a 911 call, according to an Orange Village police report. A woman and Bryce’s older sister took the toddler to the hospital after they found him lying on the driveway with blood coming from his head, the report says.

Police went to the hospital from the home where the woman and Bryce’s sister explained they were inside the home while two to three children were playing outside, the report says.

When they checked on the children they saw the 2010 Chevy Malibu in the grass off the driveway, the reports says. A two-year-old boy was inside the car. The report says it is the son of Bryce’s older sister.

When officers asked the woman who drove Bryce to the hospital how the car ended up in the grass she said, “it must have slipped out of gear.” She noted the keys were in her pocket when the incident happened.

An officer tested the gear shift while the car was off and in park. The car went into reverse, neutral and drive without any keys in the ignition and no pressure on the brakes, the report says.
