Mustangs win NIAA opener 71-50
NEEDLES — After trailing 15-8 in the first quarter, Laughlin’s Cougars rallied to enter the halftime locker room up 30-27 in The Corral of the Needles Mustangs.
After the game, new Needles Coach Paul Duchaineau admitted to administering one of his fast-becoming-famous halftime pep talks. The Mustangs trotted out of the locker room to trample the Cougars in the second half, bringing Duchaineau his first win in his first game in his home gym 70-51. That Laughlin is an NIAA 2A South League opponent made the victory even sweeter: this one counts.
Dawsen Yeager and Nathan Rodriguez scored 24 points each in the upset; Trevyn Diaz added 13.
Diego Trujillo led the Cougars with 19; Josh Furr scored 13 and Tyrell Gonzalez added nine.
The Mustangs scored 20 and 23 in quarters three and four while holding Laughlin to nine and 12.
Each team went to the free throw line 19 times in the game. Needles made good on 13 of theirs, Laughlin only seven.
