Cuban Asley Gonzalez wins gold at judo worlds
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Asley Gonzalez of Cuba defeated Varlam Liparteliani of Georgia to win the gold medal in the men’s 90-kilogram division at the judo world championships on Friday.
Gonzalez, the silver medalist at the 2012 London Olympics, outlasted the No. 1-ranked Liparteliani to secure the gold at the Maracanazinho arena.
The bronze medals went to Kirill Denisov of Russia and Ilias Iliadis of Greece, the 2004 Olympic champion.
In the women’s 70-kilogram division, Colombian Yuri Alvear, the bronze medalist in London, won her second world title by beating Laura Vargas Kock of Germany. In the women’s 78-kilogram category, Kyong Sol of North Korea won the gold by beating Marhinde Verkerk of the Netherlands.
