Downey Sought Help for Depression

December 6, 2000

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Robert Downey Jr., facing possible drug charges stemming from a Thanksgiving weekend arrest, reportedly sought help for depression during a brief hospital stay.

The actor checked into the psychiatric unit of Cedars Sinai Medical Center on Friday and was released Sunday, the TV shows ``Entertainment Tonight″ and ``Access Hollywood″ reported Tuesday.

Downey’s spokesman, Alan Nierob, declined to comment on the stories.

The Riverside County district attorney’s office is deciding this week whether to file charges against Downey in connection with his Nov. 25 arrest at a Palm Springs resort.

An anonymous 911 call led police investigators to Downey’s hotel room, where they allegedly found cocaine and methamphetamine.

The 35-year-old actor, who is working as a guest star on the Fox series ``Ally McBeal,″ was released on bail in August after serving a year in prison in connection with a previous drug case.
