Billerica Girls Fend Off New Mission

Sydney Sartell led the way on offense with 19 points as Billerica beat New Mission, 57-46, in a non-league girls basketball game.

The Indians kept stretching their leads in the contest but New Mission battled back every time except the last.

Gia Ames helped spark the Indians offense with 11 points, but it was the defense that led the victory.

Lowell 50

The Red Raiders (1-5) fell in their consolation game of the Tony Romano Tournament at Tewksbury High.

Niky Irrizarry scored 21 points, Athena Mowatt added 11 and Kiana Prohn chipped in 9 for Lowell.

Melrose jumped out to a 20-3 lead by the end of the first quarter, but after three quarters the score was tied 40-40 as LHS made a nice comeback.

The Gryphons (7-1) lost their first game of the year and settled for third place in the annual Salem Holiday Classic.

Emma Rossino and Araceli Lopez had 8 points and 3 rebounds each for Greater Lowell, while Aliza Som had 6 points and 4 boards and Kaelynn Tanner scored 5.

Freshman Hannah Cochran topped the Littleton scoresheet along with junior Rachel Klock, as each recorded 9 points.

Emma Wilson paced Groton-Dunstable’s balanced attack with 12 points and 3 rebounds.

Jillian Van Pelt checked in with 10 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists, while Nicole Tammaro finished with 9 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.

Bronwyn Mulligan scored 8 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Groton-Dunstable (3-1).

The Rams won their third straight game as senior Casey DeCost came off the bench to spearhead the offense with a 16-point night.

Senior Zach Mickle had 13 points, 11 of them in the fourth quarter as the Rams (3-2) took a 27-25 halftime lead and extended it in the late going.

Jared Rizzo added 11 points and 10 rebounds for ST, which hosts Essex Tech on New Year’s Day at 2:30.
