Navy Searches For Missing Crewmen From Chopper That Crashed Into Ocean
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) _ The Navy searched today for three crewmen missing after a helicopter crashed into the Atlantic Ocean during a training flight.
Four Navy crewmen were aboard an HH-46 Sea Knight helicopter when it crashed about 500 miles east-northeast of Bermuda on Monday afternoon, said Chief Petty Officer Scott Mohr, a Navy spokesman in Norfolk.
One survivor was rescued after the crash. Mohr did not have details of his condition. The names of the crewmen were being withheld until relatives could be notified.
The helicopter was deployed aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Inchon, which left its home port in Norfolk last week en route to the Mediterranean Sea. The helicopter was assigned to Helicopter Support Squadron Six, Detachment One, based at the Norfolk Naval Air Station.
The cause of the accident was under investigation, Mohr said.
