Snow Near Great Lakes; Rain in East
Undated (AP) _ Northern Lower Michigan braced for as much as a foot of snow today as low pressure developed along a cold front, triggering winter storm watches for northwestern Illinois and the Lake Michigan shore areas of Wisconsin as well.
Warm, wet weather was predicted from the Appalachians up the East Coast. Gusty winds and heavy rain were expected to lash the East Coast by Friday before warm weather returned late Saturday.
Southern California looked for more of the gusty Santa Anas that buffeted some mountain areas Wednesday with winds of up to 40 mph. A wind advisory remained in effect for Southern California’s mountain areas and below canyons and passes along the coast.
A storm system developing rapidly off the northern Pacific Coast was expected to bring high winds and heavy snow to parts of Washington and Oregon by today.
Winter storm warnings were in effect today for Oregon’s Cascade Mountains.
A high wind watch was posted for the coast of Washington and northern Oregon today. Strong winds also were forecast for western Montana.
Fog and drizzle enveloped New England and formed in the valleys of California.
Rainshowers extended from Texas across the central Gulf Coast states into the mid-Atlantic region Wednesday with scattered thunderstorms from southeastern Texas to northern Georgia.
Afternoon thunderstorms Wednesday produced nearly 2 inches of rain and high winds at Baton Rouge, La. One mobile home was destroyed and two buildings and four other mobile homes were damaged.
A cold front dumped snow on parts of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. Light snow extended from eastern Kansas into southern Iowa.
Wednesday’s coldest reading in the lower 48 was 6 below zero at Truckee, Calif. The nation’s hot spots Wednesday: Fort Myers and Orlando, Fla., at 85 degrees.
