Boys burned by fire in Southwest Side garage

May 2, 2019

Two boys were burned by a fire Wednesday afternoon in a garage on the Southwest Side.

San Antonio Fire Department Battalion Chief Oscar Gonzalez said firefighters arrived to find the two boys just outside the home and smoke billowing from the garage at about 4 p.m. in the 5500 block of War Cloud Drive.

The boys, ages 11 and 15, may have been trying to refuel a go-kart in the garage when the fire ignited, Gonzalez said.

The two were taken to University Hospital. The 15-year-old received burns to his legs, while the 11-year-old had more extensive burns and needed assistance breathing, firefighters said.

“They were stabilized but they are going to have significant burn injuries,” Gonzalez said.

The two were the only ones at the home when the fire occurred, investigators said.

Gonzalez said the father of the two arrived at the home as they were extinguishing the flames.
