America West Gets Slots for NY, Washington Airports
PHOENIX (AP) _ The Federal Aviation Administration on Monday awarded landing slots at Washington National and New York’s LaGuardia Airport to Phoenix-based America West Airlines, the airline announced.
The four slots at LaGuardia and the six at Washington National will allow America West to make two and three round trips daily, respectively, to the airports, spokesman Mark Inciong said.
The slots became available because they no longer are being used by Eastern Airlines, Inciong said. Eastern has been crippled by financial and labor troubles.
America West has been seeking to buy Eastern’s Northeast shuttle in part to obtain landing rights at LaGuardia and Washington National, but Monday’s announcement will not affect the company’s offer, America West spokeswoman Daphne Decino said.
America West, which has hubs in Phoenix and Las Vegas, already serves New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Baltimore-Washington Airport.
Details on start of the new service has not been decided, Inciong said. The FAA said it could withdraw the slots on seven-day notice, he said.
