Earthquake Hits Andaman Sea Off Indonesia
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) _ A strong earthquake centered off Indonesia’s Sumatra island shook much of southern Thailand on Thursday but there were no reports of damage or injuries, Thailand’s Meteorological Department said.
The quake measured 6.0 on the Richter scale and was centered in the Andaman Sea about 410 miles southwest of Thailand’s southern island of Phuket, the department said.
It said it had received reports that tremors were felt in high-rise buildings in Phuket and nearby Songkhla province as well as in Bangkok.
The Richter scale is a gauge of the energy released by an earthquake, as measured by the ground motion recorded on a seismograph.
Every increase of one number means the ground motion is 10 times greater. A magnitude 6 can cause severe damage in populated areas, while a magnitude 7 can inflict widespread, heavy damage.
