One of several varieties of Adidas Yeezy sneakers, which retail for $200 to $645, and which often times gain even more value if resold. Prosecutors say a Tyngsboro teen was stabbed over a pair of the shoes, though they did not specify which type. Sun staff photos can be ordered by visiting our SmugMug site.

LOWELL -- Prosecutors say a pair of Kanye West-inspired sneakers inspired a Thursday altercation that led to a Tyngsboro teen getting stabbed and a Nashua man facing charges.

Dequan Hagen, 19, was arraigned from a stairwell at Lowell District Court Monday, out of view of the public and press. He was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for Friday.

Hagen is charged with armed robbery, home invasion, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon and malicious destruction of property over $250 in connection with the Thursday night stabbing.

According to Middlesex Assistant District Attorney Jacqueline McCormick, Tyngsboro police responded to a Frost Road home for a report of a stabbing Thursday night. While en route, they were alerted Lowell General Hospital had called and said they had a juvenile stabbing victim from Tyngsboro, she said.

Upon arrival, police spoke with the alleged victim’s mother and brother, who told them the 17-year-old boy had been stabbed in the stomach area while attempting to sell a pair of high-end Adidas Yeezy sneakers to the defendant, McCormick said.

McCormick did not indicate the exact model of the shoes, their value or how much the teen had sought in the transaction.

Limited release Adidas Yeezy sneakers, designed in collaboration with rapper Kanye West, range in retail price from about $200 to $645, but can garner resale values in the thousands depending on age and rarity, according to examples outlined in SoleCollector.com ‘s “The Complete Yeezy Price Guide.” A pair of Adidas Yeezy 350 Boost “Turtledove” sneakers, for instance, originally released in 2015 for $200, had an average resale value of about $1,900 at the time the article was published in July. According to stockX.com , a live ‘bid/ask’ marketplace, the average value is about $1,575 now.

The alleged victim’s mother told police that her garage side door had been kicked in and the door frame was broken, McCormick said. She said officers noticed it appeared there was a struggle in the garage and there were drops of blood on the floor.

The mother also turned over home security surveillance video that clearly showed the male suspect approaching the side door with what appeared to be a knife, McCormick said.

The victim’s brother told police that the defendant tried to grab the sneakers and run out of the garage, she said. The victim and his brother put the defendant in a headlock and struck him with a baseball bat, she said.

“At one point there was a second swing and they missed him,” McCormick said. “The defendant returned with a knife in his right hand and attempted to grab the sneakers again. He then stabbed the victim in the stomach and grabbed the sneakers and the bat and ran out the door.”

Tyngsboro police obtained a warrant for Hagen’s arrest Friday afternoon, and he turned himself in that night.

Public defender Lynda Dantes said she agreed there was probable cause based on the reading of the police report, but she believes “there is more to this story than sneakers.”

Judge Michael Brooks granted McCormick’s requests that Hagen be ordered to stay away from and have no contact with the alleged victim and witnesses.
