Real Madrid Wins Round 2 Opener 2-0
Real Madrid, trying to become the first team in a decade to win consecutive European Champions Cups, won its second-round opener 2-0 at Leeds on Wednesday night behind goals from Fernando Hierro and Raul Gonzalez.
Hierro knocked in a header off a high, looping cross from Luis Figo in the 66th minute and Raul beat goalkeeper Paul Robinson with a 10-yard chip two minutes later.
In the other Group D game, Anderlecht upset Italian champion Lazio of Rome 1-0. At Brussels, Belgium, Tomasz Radzinski slid a ball under goalkeeper Angelo Peruzzi in the 84th minute, his fifth goal of the tournament.
In Group C, Spartak Moscow routed Arsenal 4-1 on a snow-covered field in Moscow. The London team went ahead on Silvio Silvinho’s goal in the second minute, but the Russian team rallied as Antonio Marcao scored in the 29th and 51st. Yegor Titov added a goal in the 77th and Luis Robson connected in the 82nd.
Bayern Munich won 1-0 at home over Lyon when Jens Jeremies’ header in the 55th minute was deflected by Patrick Mueller into his own net.
On Tuesday, Manchester United beat Panathinaikos 3-1 and Valencia defeated Sturm Graz 2-0 in Group A. AC Milan tied Galatasaray 2-2 and Deportivo de La Coruna won 3-1 at Paris-St. Germain in Group B.
