Giants Exercise Snow Option
SAN FRANCISCO (AP)_ The San Francisco Giants on Monday exercised the contract option of Gold Glove first baseman J.T. Snow for the 1999 season.
Snow won his second consecutive Gold Glove, and the fourth of his career, committing only one error in 1,134 chances.
He hit .248 and ranked third on the team with 28 doubles, 15 home runs and 79 RBIs.
Snow, 30, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder last Thursday in Los Angeles to repair damaged cartilage. The Giants said he will be ready for spring training in February.
``Both as a Gold Glove fielder and as a run-producing hitter, J.T. has been a key contributor to our team’s success the past two seasons,″ general manager Brian Sabean said.
The Giants also announced they have not exercised the 1999 option for pitcher Osvaldo Fernandez.
Fernandez had season-ending surgery on his right elbow in July 1997. He attempted a comeback during spring training this year, but reinjured the elbow during an exhibition game in March and underwent more surgery in May.
Sabean also said the team’s coaching staff, under manager Dusty Baker, will all return next season.
Sonny Jackson, who served as bench coach, will become third base coach and Ron Wotus will move from third base to the bench.
