Poland’s LOT orders 2 crew in cockpit through entire flights

March 28, 2015

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland’s state airline LOT says it has ordered at least two authorized crew members in the cockpit at all times on all flights, effective immediately.

LOT said it introduced the measure Friday night, on a recommendation to all airlines from the European Aviation Safety Agency.

The carrier said in a statement that should a pilot want to leave the cockpit, an authorized cabin crew member would take the place in the cockpit for the time of the pilot’s absence.

The decision comes in reaction to the crash of a Germanwings Airbus jetliner in France on Tuesday. French prosecutors say its co-pilot Andreas Lubitz barricaded himself inside the cockpit and deliberately crashed it into a mountainside in the French Alps, killing all 150 people aboard.
