SEATTLE (AP) _ The Seattle SuperSonics announced Tuesday they won’t exercise the $1.9 million option on the final year of Dale Ellis’ contract, making him a free agent.
Ellis, 37, is the NBA’s all-time leading 3-point shooter.
He averaged 11.8 points and led the league in 3-point shooting _ 46.4 percent _ after being acquired in a trade with Denver before last season. He earned $1.9 million last season in his second stint in Seattle and his 15th year in the league.
``I’m not retiring,″ Ellis said.
Ellis helped the Sonics win 61 regular-season games and the Pacific Division title although he suffered a strained abdominal muscle at the end of the season.
The Sonics still could sign Ellis as a free agent _ at a reduced salary _ after the NBA lockout, although that seems unlikely.
