Coaches’ Scuffle Leads to Arrest
WESTPORT, Conn. (AP) _ A scuffle after the game between two youth football coaches led to assault charges for both men.
James DeVito refused to shake hands with opposing coach Peter Fusaro after Fusaro’s team won 13-6 in a Police Athletic League game, police said.
After a heated exchange, DeVito allegedly slapped Fusaro in the face and the fight escalated. DeVito was charged with third-degree assault. He told police he apologized to the team and resigned as coach.
Fusaro was charged with breach of peace and admitted the fight set a bad example for the youngsters.
``We’re like the kids’ idols. Whatever we do, they want to do. So if we are doing wrong, it’s not a good influence on the kids,″ Fusaro said.
Fusaro, 42, of Greenwich, is due in court Nov. 1. DeVito, 50, of Fairfield, has a Nov. 2 court date.
