AKRON, Ohio (AP) _ Goodyear said Monday it would lay off 140 salaried and hourly workers at its general products plant in New Bedford, Mass. in a move aimed at improving efficiency at the facility.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. said it would lay off the workers as it phased out production of several lower volume speciality products between now and July 13.

Ned Kendall, Goodyear vice president and general manager of the Graphic, Roofing and Shoe Products Division, said in a news release that all the products involved were in mature, non-growth markets.

Shoe products marketing operations in the plant will not be affected by the move, Kendall said. The plant, which employs about 400 people, will focus on maintaining Goodyear's rapid growth in roofing products, selected graphic products and internal use items, he said.
