Phillies purchase Ruffcorn from White Sox

January 11, 1997

PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Scott Ruffcorn, a promising minor league pitcher who struggled in the majors, was sold Friday from the Chicago White Sox to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Ruffcorn, 27, was Chicago’s first-round pick in the June 1991 draft. He made one start and two relief appearances in two separate stints with the White Sox last year, posting an 0-1 record and an 11.37 ERA.

The right-hander also had brief stints with the White Sox in every season since 1993.

This winter, he pitched for Escogido in the Dominican League, posting a 3-1 record and a 2.08 ERA in 39 innings.

Ruffcorn pitched for new Phillies manager Terry Francona in 1993 at Double-A Birmingham and was a Southern League all-star that year with a 9-4 record and three shutouts.

``He’s struggled at the major league level, but has been a dominant pitcher at every other level he’s pitched at,″ Francona said. ``We can give him more of a chance to develop because the potential is there.″
