Belgium beats England...Djokovic beats Nadal...Kerber takes first set in women’s final
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — Belgium has won the battle for third place at the World Cup with a 2-0 victory over England. Thomas Meunier gave Belgium the lead in the fourth minute and Eden Hazard put the result beyond doubt when he finished off a counter-attacking move in the 82nd. It’s Belgium’s best World Cup finish ever. Its previous best was fourth place in 1986.
LONDON (AP) — Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) has advanced to his fifth Wimbledon final with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, 3-6, 10-8 victory over Rafael Nadal. The match — which began on Friday evening — finished after 5 hours, 14 minutes as Djokovic secured the only break of the fifth set. It was the second-longest semifinal in Wimbledon history, trailing only Kevin Anderson’s 26-24 victory over John Isner on Friday. Three-time champion Djokovic will face Anderson in Sunday’s final.
LONDON (AP) — The women’s final is underway at Wimbledon. Serena Williams is playing Angelique Kerber in a rematch of the 2016 final, when Williams won her seventh Wimbledon title. The start of today’s final was delayed more than two hours while the men’s semifinal was completed. Kerber won the first set, 6-3.
HOUSTON (AP) — Houston starter Gerrit Cole is expected to come off the bereavement list today when the Astros host Detroit. Cole was placed on the list Tuesday following the death of his grandmother, a day after throwing six scoreless innings in a loss to Oakland. Michael Fulmer starts for the Tigers.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — A northern New Jersey horse racing track has brought legal sports betting to New York City’s doorstep. The Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford began taking sports bets this morning. The track is located in the sports complex where the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets play, about 6 miles from New York City.
