Stamp Raises $20M to Fight Cancer
WASHINGTON (AP) _ The special fund-raising postage stamp for breast cancer has brought in some $20 million with more than a year left to circulate.
Postal authorities say they have received thousands of inquiries in recent weeks about a false report that sales of the stamp were about to end.
Under legislation passed by Congress last year it will remain on sale until the summer of 2002.
The stamp, called a semipostal, sells for 40 cents and the amount of money received in excess of the 34-cent postage rate is donated to research into breast cancer.
So far some 285 million of the stamps have been sold.
