Police: Plains Twp. Man Crashed Stolen Vehicle, After High-speed Chase In Lackawanna County

August 6, 2018

THORNHURST TWP. — A Luzerne County man crashed a stolen vehicle in the township Saturday after leading state and local police on a high-speed chase, state police said. Mark James Fetter, 52, 162 Gouge St., Plains Twp., fled on foot after crashing the vehicle at the intersection of Bear Lake Road and River Road sometime after 2 a.m. State police located Fetter walking near Bear Lake Road later in the morning and took him into custody. The incident unfolded shortly after midnight Saturday, when Dickson City police responded to a reported domestic incident involving a firearm at a borough hotel. A clerk there told officers that a woman, later identified as Maria Metzger, 29, of Plains Twp., called 911 from a hotel phone, reported the domestic incident and told authorities that Fetter was armed. Metzger later told police that Fetter confronted her in the hotel lobby for calling 911 and told her to leave with him, police said. The two traveled east on Business Route 6 in Metzger’s 2016 Subaru Crosstrek, which Fetter was driving. Metzger demanded several times to drive the Subaru. When Fetter pulled over in a rural area of Archbald, Metzger got out and Fetter “took off at a high rate of speed,” police wrote in a criminal complaint. Blakely police located Fetter speeding west in the Subaru on Business Route 6. Dickson City police joined the pursuit but lost sight of Fetter near the Viewmont Mall, according to the complaint. State police began to pursue Fetter in Old Forge about 2:09 a.m. It’s unclear when exactly Fetter crashed the Subaru in Thornhurst Twp., but state police found him walking near Bear Lake Road and arrested him about 6:30 a.m., police said. He was not armed. Fetter faces both felony and misdemeanor charges, including receiving stolen property, unlawful restraint, flight to avoid apprehension and other counts. He remains in Lackawanna County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail. Preliminary hearing information was not immediately available.
