Wildcats shock Lobos with game-winning field goal

Cy Woods hit a 47-yard field goal on the game’s final play by Gustavo Olmedo to beat Langham Creek, 41-39, Thursday night at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium.

Cy Woods (2-2, 1-1) were up 35-14 early in the second half, then the Lobos took the lead with 1:13 left before the Wildcats with no timeouts gained enough yards to set up the FG.

Langham Creek (0-4, 0-2) finished with 436 total yards to Cy Woods’ 467. The Wildcats ran the ball for 284 yards to the Lobos’ 300 and had possession of the ball for 29 minutes to Langham Creek’s 19. Both teams fumbled a combined nine times.

“Like I told the guys it’s probably the biggest win, as far the importance of the game and how the game ended, that I’ve ever been a part of in 34 years of coaching,” Cy Woods head coach Trent Faith said.

Cy Woods’ Carson Danner was 14 for 23 with 183 passing yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT. He also rushed for 169 yards on 37 attempts and 3 TDs. Jacob Tesch rushed for 121 yards on 12 carries. Christian Scott had 60 receiving yards on 6 catches and 1 TD.

Langham Creek’s Chris Herron was 8 for 15 with 136 passing yards and 4 interceptions. He also rushed for 248 yards on 27 carries and 4 TDs.

Herron threw an INT after the defense forced a three-and-out. Scott then scored on a 7-yard pass from Danner. The score capped a 3-play, 47-yard drive. Danner’s 17-yard gain set up the score.

Danner scored on an 11-yard run to put Cy Woods up 14-0. Danner’s 32-yard pass to Conner Fault set up the score and capped a 4-play, 46-yard drive.

Herron connected with Eddie King for a 46-yard gain. A few play later Herron lost the ball on a fumble with a chance to score.

After a fumble recovery by the Lobo defense, Rashaun Hammonds scored on a 5-yard run to make it a one-possession game. Herron’s 22-yard pass to Kash McCray set up the score.

Danner’s pass was intercepted by Jalen Jackson ball at their 17-yard line to start the second quarter. Herron scored on a 5-yard run to tie it. The score capped an 83-yard scoring drive. McCray had two first downs on the drive.

Danner scored on a short run to put Cy Woods up 21-14 with 3:15 left in the first half. The score capped an 11-play, 75-yard drive.

Caleb Rutherford picked off Herron with :17 left before halftime. Cameron Sowell scored on a 32-yard pass from Danner with no time left to make it 28-14.

Herron fumbled on a bad snap but recovered it to start the second half. Nolan Authorlee picked off Herron on the next play.

Danner scored on a short run, capping a 4-play, 16-yard scoring drive to make it 35-14. Tesch’s 14-yard gain set up a first-and-goal.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the group of men that I am right now, I promise you that,” Faith said.

Herron fumbled on the ensuring drive, but a Cy Woods penalty gave the Lobos the ball back. Rutherford recovered another fumble a few plays later.

After forcing a three-and-out, Corien Azema scored on a 50-yard punt return to make it 35-21.

The Lobos recovered an onside kick on the ensuing play. Herron scored on a 30-yard run to make it 35-27 after a failed PAT.

Cy Woods added a 25-yard FG to make it 38-27.

Herron scored on a 19-yard run to make it 38-33 after a failed 18-yard two-point conversion. Herron’s 33-yard run set up the score.

Langham Creek took over at the Cy Woods 39-yard line after a turnover. Herron was then picked off by Reagan Simmons in the end zone for a touchback.

Langham Creek got the ball back after a Cy Woods punt with 1:52 left.

Herron scored on a short run to put the Lobos up 39-38 with 1:13 to go. The two-point try was no good. Ronald Rowan’s 50-yard catch set up the score.
