Local church to host annual job fair in La Feria

September 18, 2018

LA FERIA — Andi Atkinson isn’t leaving any stone unturned in her effort to help people find work in the Valley.

As of yesterday Atkinson, First United Methodist church of La Feria job fair coordinator, had already confirmed local business owners and managers to gather at the 5th Annual La Feria Job Fair.

One of those business contacts was Karen Martinez, Liberty Tax Service, chief operating officer who signed up for the job fair yesterday.

“We believe that everyone should love what they do and that’s why I really enjoy attending the La Feria Job Fair,” Martinez said. “There’s a great diversity of employers at this event and there is an opportunity there for everyone”

Martinez’s business consists of tax preparation, insurance, and financial services.

“We represent two different employers - Liberty Tax Service and Freedom Insurance Company,” Martinez said. “We are currently hiring for the upcoming tax season.”

The job fair is scheduled to takes place Thursday, Oct. 18 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of La Feria.

The Methodist church is located at 331 Main St.

“Whether it is for full-time, part-time or seasonal work, anyone looking for work can make contact with at least 17 area employers at the event,” Atkinson said. “Some of the employers will even conduct on-site interviews.”

Workforce Solutions Cameron will also provide Internet-ready computers at the job fair so applicants can immediately fill out and submit their applications online.

Atkinson said the job fair was created by the First United Methodist Church of La Feria to help people the church was giving food to.

Last year, during most of the job fair, it was elbow-to-elbow as job seekers jockeyed for space in line to talk about job opportunities with Border Patrol, La Feria ISD, insurance agents, restaurants and more.

Atkinson said the La Feria Job Fair has been well received over the years, with 300 to 350 people in attendance annually.

Atkinson suggests job seekers who do not have transportation to La Feria can ride Valley Metro for free and should call 1-800-574-8322 for the route and schedule.

“The good thing about this job fair is that it offers a wide range of businesses and positions,” Atkinson said. “People of all ages and education levels attend because it offers job prospects for nearly everyone.”
