Margaret missing, Queen’s Plate moved up
TORONTO (AP) _ Because of labor problems, Prince Margaret’s appearance at Woodbine race track has been canceled and the date of the Queen’s Plate has been moved up a week.
``I have advised Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret that it would be inadvisable to attend this year’s running of the Queen’s Plate, which had been scheduled for July 13, because of concerns relating to the current labor dispute,″ George Hendrie, chairman of the Ontario Jockey Club’s board of trustees, said Monday in a news release. ``It is with great regret such a decision had to be made.
``We are now moving the Queen’s Plate to July 7, which is the traditional date for the race to be run.″
Mutuel clerks have been locked out at Woodbine since last month.
The Queen’s Plate is North America’s oldest continuously run stakes race.
