December 24, 1997

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) __ Coby Turner scored a season-high 25 points Tuesday night to lead Dayton to a 70-57 victory over DePaul.

Turner, a 6-foot-7 junior, entered the game as the second best 3-point shooter in the nation, and hit 3-of-4 against the Blue Demons.

DePaul was led by Willie Coleman with 17 points. Ayinde Avery added 12.

Jermaine Watts, usually the Blue Demons’ top scorer, had 11 points. He missed practice Monday because of a funeral and did not enter the game until the second quarter.

Watts picked up a fourth foul with 15:06 left to play, took the bench, and then fouled out with 3:40 left.

Dayton led 27-21 at the half and outshot DePaul 47-31 percent. The Flyers (6-4) have won four of their last five games.

The Blue Demons (3-6) have lost four straight.

Dayton’s Ryan Perryman had 13 points and 7 rebounds. He is second in the nation in rebounding with an average of 13.

DePaul was cold at the outset, hitting just 1-of-12 field goal attempts in the first eight minutes. The Flyers converted four of their first 11 attempts, but still built a 10-3 lead.

The biggest Dayton lead in the first half, 27-19, came with 48 seconds left on a pair of free throws by Turner, who had 9 points at the break.

His 3-point shot with 2:09 left in the game gave Dayton a 60-48 lead and put the game away for good.
