Dodd, Dredge Lead at Dunhill Golf
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) _ Welshmen Stephen Dodd and Bradley Dredge each shot a 7-under 65 Thursday to share the lead after the first round of the Dunhill Championship.
Dodd, who led the first round of the tournament last year, had three birdies on the front nine and four on the back for a bogey-free round at the Houghton Golf Club.
Dredge’s only bogey came on the first hole. He birdied five of the last eight holes on the front nine, including Nos. 2-4, and added three birdies on the back nine.
South Africa’s Callie Swart and Louis Oosthuizen and Zimbabwe’s Sean Farrell were tied for third place at 6 under.
Former British Open champion Paul Lawrie carded a 31 on the front nine, and followed bogeys at Nos. 10 and 11 with six birdies over the final eight holes for a 4-under 68.
Trevor Immelman, coming off a victory at the South African Open last week, finished at 3-under 69.
Defending champion Justin Rose opened with a 1-over 73.
