AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) _ First-round draft pick Rodney White, the nation's top freshman scorer last season, signed a multiyear contract with the Detroit Pistons.

White was the ninth choice overall in the June draft. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 18.7 points a game for Charlotte last season.

``Everyone knows how pleased we are to have had the opportunity to draft a player the caliber of Rodney White,'' Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said Thursday. ``Now that he is signed, we can focus on getting him acclimated to the city of Detroit and ready for training camp in October.''

White was the first freshman in Conference USA history to win MVP honors in the the league tournament.
