Providence holding annual school choice fair

January 12, 2019

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Hundreds of Providence families are expected to attend the latest school choice fair — a chance for parents and students to express interest in the city’s top schools.

Saturday’s event at the Providence Career and Technical Academy will draw representatives from 41 city and district charter schools.

Families of incoming kindergarteners, sixth-graders and ninth-graders can request their top choices for schools for the 2019-2020 academic year that begins this fall.

Although at least 20 percent of public school seats are reserved for children who live in a given school’s neighborhood, families interested in other schools can place their names in a lottery.

Organizers say more than 500 people are expected to participate.

Officials also will present the city’s five-year vision for improving schools.
