PARIS (AP) _ A European-built Ariane rocket has placed into orbit an observation satellite that will provide high-resolution images of the Earth's surface.

The Ariane-4 blasted off from Kourou, French Guyana, on the northeastern tip of South America late Monday, the launch company Arianespace said.

The rocket, Ariane's 107th mission, lifted up a Spot-4 observation satellite that will monitor the expansion of deserts, vegetation and the ozone layer.

Originally planned for Friday, the launch was delayed after a defect in the satellite's electronic system was discovered.
