More Mystery Balloons Land in Western Japan
TOKYO (AP) _ At least 10 mysterious balloons landed over wide areas in western Japan today, the second such incident in less than a week.
Last Saturday, about 30 giant balloons were recovered in western and central Japan, police said. They were about 20 feet long and 7 feet in diameter and had 6-inch plastic tubes attached bearing the words ``on,″ ``off″ and ``test″ in English.
Nobuyuki Kono, a Hiroshima state police spokesman, said residents found three similar balloons today. More were reported in four other states.
Police were investigating the origin of the balloons, which officials said may have been used for meteorological studies.
In May 1994, dozens of vinyl balloons that had been released on the Korean peninsula drifted to the same region of Japan. Those balloons were carrying propaganda materials.
