Ada coroner identifies Oregon toddler killed by gunshot; investigation continues

November 6, 2018

The 2-year-old boy who died from a gunshot wound to the head Saturday has been identified by the Ada County coroner.

First responders took Liam Mankins, 2, to Boise by air ambulance from Baker City, Oregon, after police say the child suffered a gunshot wound, according to a news release from Tonia Fleming, spokeswoman for the Ada County Coroner’s Office. Mankins died at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center about 2:45 p.m. Saturday.

The case is still under investigation by police in Baker City. Baker City Police Chief Dustin Newman did not return a call for comment Monday afternoon.

According to a post on the department’s Facebook page, the boy’s parents — both in their 30s — were both at home about 11:15 a.m. at the time of the incident. The Baker County Major Crime Team is investigating with assistance from Oregon State Police Crime. The release did not state if the case will result in any charges.
