RI Supreme Court dismisses claims filed against former mayor

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Supreme Court has upheld a ruling tossing defamation and other claims filed against former Central Falls Mayor Charles Moreau.

The Providence Journal reports the court ruled Monday that a Superior Court judge was right in dismissing the claims filed by library staff members and former Police Chief Thomas Wilson.

The court says the three-year statute of limitations had expired on some of the claims, and the plaintiffs failed to support others with specific facts.

Moreau previously pleaded guilty in 2014 to soliciting and accepting a bribe in exchange for a no-bid contract.

Documents filed last Wednesday show he has agreed to plead guilty to corruptly soliciting or accepting a bribe by an official of a city receiving federal funds.
