LONDON (AP) _ Prime Minister Tony Blair is getting a 2.9 percent salary increase, bringing his yearly pay to $180,300.

The government said Tuesday that increase over Blair's current $175,628 income takes effect on April 1.

The independent review body that makes salary recommendations approved a pay raise of $253,300, but Blair opted for the lower figure. The review panel came into effect in 1997.

Lawmakers and government ministers will also get a 2.9 percent pay raise, Blair's office said.

That takes ministers' pay to $154,600 and parliament to $77,200. from $75,000. The raises are above Britain's rate of inflation

President Clinton, who earns $200,000 a year, signed legislation last fall doubling the annual salary of future U.S. presidents to $400,000.
