Spain 59, Czechoslovakia 58
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) _ Spain rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit Friday to beat Czechoslovakia 59-58 and finish fifth in the women’s Olympic basketball tournament.
Spain had beaten Czechoslovakia by the same score earlier in the tournament. The Spanish team finished 3-2, while Czechoslovakia - which went 0-5 and finished last four years ago at Seoul - wound up 1-4.
Czechoslovakia, behind the play of Iveta Bielikova and Renata Hirakova, took a 20-5 lead in the first 8 1/2 minutes. Then Spain scored the next 18 points - 14 from the free throw line - in a span of three minutes to take a 23-20 lead.
Spain led 47-42 with about 7 1/2 minutes to play before Czechoslovakia went on an 8-0 run to take a 50-47 lead.
Spain came right back, scoring eight straight to take a 55-50 lead with 3:52 left. Ana Alvaro had a 3-pointer and Marina Farragut converted a three- point play to cap the run.
After Kamila Vodickova scored five straight points to tie the score, Margarita Geuer scored inside to give Spain the lead for good, 57-55 with two minutes left.
Geuer finished with 11 points and Carlota Castrejana had 10 for Spain. Bielikova led Czechoslovakia with 14 points, although she didn’t score in the final 18 minutes.
