Train Derails, Cars Fall onto Interstate Below; No One Hurt
WARREN, Mich. (AP) _ A freight train derailed on a bridge over a freeway today, sending three freight cars crashing to the pavement below and leaving a fourth dangling over the highway. No vehicles on the interstate were hit.
At least 13 cars of an 85-car train were off the track after the accident at 8:15 a.m., Grand Trunk Railroad spokeswoman Gloria Combe said.
Interstate 696, one of the Detroit area’s busiest, was closed in both directions, because two cars had fallen on eastbound lanes and one on westbound lanes. Two hopper cars and an empty tank car fell, she said.
One car still atop the overpass caught fire, apparently when a power line fell on it, Combe said. It wasn’t immediately clear what, if anything, that car was carrying.
Combe said the cause of the derailment probably wouldn’t be known for several days.
