Mazie Hirono, Dem senator, apologizes for fundraising off Brett Kavanaugh allegations
The re-election campaign for Sen. Mazie Hirono apologized Thursday for an email blast that used the sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh as a fundraising pitch.
The email, titled, “Asking for a minute to explain [Judge Kavanaugh],” said the Hawaii Democrat was too busy “fighting the Republicans” to fundraise and asked for “a donation of $3 or more” to put toward her re-election.
“This has to be my focus,” Ms. Hirono wrote in the email, CNN reported. “What that means is I have limited time to campaign for our re-election or to fundraise making us particularly vulnerable to right-wing attacks.”
Ms. Hirono’s campaign later apologized for the email and said any donations made from it would be donated.
“A fundraising message was sent this morning in error,” the campaign told CNN in an email. “We apologize sincerely for the error. All contributions that were made on this page will be donated to organizations helping survivors of sexual assault.”
Ms. Hirono serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which heard Christine Blasey Ford’s and Judge Kavanaugh’s testimonies on Thursday regarding Ms. Ford’s sexual assault allegations against the Supreme Court nominee. Ms. Hirono has been at the forefront of demanding an FBI investigation into the allegations, which Judge Kavanaugh has strongly denied.
