SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ Outfielder Armando Rios was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday with a partial tear of his left rotator cuff.

Rios was scheduled for arthroscopic surgery Tuesday, but decided to put off the operation until after getting a second opinion from orthopedist Jim Andrews in Birmingham, Ala.

``They don't know if it's a partial or the whole tear,'' said Rios, who will pay his own way to Alabama for the second opinion. ``I just feel like if someone's going to go in, I don't want just one person's opinion.''

Rios, who partially tore his right rotator cuff in 1997, left Monday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers in the eighth inning with a jammed shoulder. He was injured an inning earlier while diving to catch a liner.

The Giants recalled outfielder Calvin Murray from Fresno of the Pacific Coast League.
