Timbers share MLS lead with win over Rapids
PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) — The Portland Timbers beat the Colorado Rapids 3-0 on Sunday to extend their unbeaten streak to 15 games and take a share of the Major League Soccer lead.
French striker Frederic Piquionne, Will Johnson and Ryan Johnson each scored to move the Timbers atop the MLS standings on 30 points with Real Salt Lake.
At Chester, Pennsylvania, Conor Casey scored twice to lift the Philadelphia Union over the New York Red Bulls 3-0.
Casey had a goal disallowed in the fourth minute when he was ruled offside. But he responded with a goal three minutes later, and one in 64th minute. Antoine Hoppenot also scored for the Union in the 88th minute.
Los Angeles rookie forward Gyasi Zardes scored just before halftime to give the Galaxy a 1-0 win over local archrival Chivas USA.
Zardes nodded in Landon Donovan’s free kick as the Galaxy ended a three-match winless streak.
