SAN DIEGO (AP) _ The San Diego Padres released reliever Rod Beck on Tuesday and recalled center fielder Freddy Guzman from Triple-A Portland.
Beck was 0-2 with a 6.38 ERA in 26 games. The 36-year-old right-hander, a three-time All-Star, has 285 saves in his career, going 38-45 with a 3.31 ERA in 704 games.
Manager Bruce Bochy plans to play Guzman on a regular basis during the remainder of the season. Guzman, who was in the starting lineup on Tuesday night against Atlanta, will bat leadoff and replace Jay Payton in center field.
Guzman batted .292 with 12 doubles, 48 runs and 48 stolen bases in 66 games. Guzman started the season at Double-A Mobile where he hit .283 with 21 runs and 17 stolen bases in 35 games.
