Police officer faces penalty for using department letterhead

February 28, 2018

ASBURY PARK, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey city police officer could lose more than two weeks’ pay for writing a letter of complaint to the county prosecutor’s office on department letterhead.

Asbury Park Police Sgt. Kamil Warraich appeared at a disciplinary hearing Tuesday, where he was charged with violating department policy by sending his complaints on department letterhead. The Asbury Park Press reports Warraich was also charged with insubordination for not responding promptly to an internal affairs memo over the complaint letter.

Warraich’s attorney says the sergeant “reasonably believed he had the right to send it” and wasn’t sending it for his own business.

Warraich says he wrote the letter because he believed the city’s internal affairs division was mishandling investigations.

Deputy Police Chief David Kelso declined comment Tuesday.
