Lightning strikes press box at Homestead
A Homestead High School athletics facility was damaged from a lightning strike tonight, drawing onlookers to the school parking lot.
Flames shot out of the baseball press box : from its sides and the roof : upon firefighters’ arrival, Aboite Fire Department Chief Gale Stelzer told reporters at the scene after the blaze died down.
He characterized the damage as “fairly significant” and was confident lightning was responsible, based on witness statements.
The actual school, which is just north of the baseball field, was not harmed.
Some players from the team were among those watching the emergency activity from afar.
Southwest Allen County Schools officials were at the scene but did not immediately provide a statement.
