Global Sesame Seeds Market by Geography - Forecast to 2023 - ResearchAndMarkets.com

November 22, 2018

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov 22, 2018--The “Global Sesame Seeds Market - Segmented by Geography - Growth, Trends, and Forecast (2018 - 2023)” report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.

The Global Production of Sesame Seeds was 4.6 million metric ton in 2017 and is expected to register a CAGR of 1.3% during the forecast period (2018-2023). China and India are the top producers and traders of sesame seed.

The escalating global demand for sesame seed for hummus, toppings on sushi, confectionery, and health foods, is likely to enhance future production in countries such as Nigeria. Production of the tiny seeds, has grown up to 40% in Nigeria in the 2017-18 season. Japan, with its sushi culture, is the leading importer of Nigerian sesame seed.

The stable demand for sesame seeds and sesame seed related products is also being generated due to the increasingly popular healthy eating trend. Also, the increasing popularity of Asian and African sesame seed-based seasonings, sauces, and marinades in Europe and North America is expected to further drive the demand for sesame seeds in the future.

The Fastest Market Growing Segment by Geography - Tanzania

Tanzania is the world’s largest producer of sesame seeds and one of the continent’s largest exporters, according to the latest available data from FAO. Few regions, which produce sesame seeds in Tanzania include Lindi, Mtwara, Ruvuma, Coast, Morogoro, Dodoma, Tanga, Rukwa, and Mbeya.

Trees in Tanzania’s southeast region are being burned down, sometimes illegally, to make way for sesame farms. Domestic policies promote rent seeking within the value chain and limit the power of farmers and have very less impact on the sesame development. The various policies focus on enhancing productivity, rather than being market oriented.

The major exporting destination of Tanzanian sesame are China, Japan, India, and Singapore. Tanzania imports negligible amounts of sesame seed, 55% of which is from the UAE, the rest being from India (27%), and Oman (18%).

Increasing Demand across Nations

Asia-Pacific is the largest producer and consumer of sesame seeds. Europe is emerging as another market for sesame seeds with the increasing health awareness and change in diet pattern among the European consumers. Greece is the largest importer of sesame seeds in Europe followed by Germany, the Netherlands and Poland.

According to the Center for the promotion of imports (CBI) report (Exporting sesame seeds to Europe, 2016) European imports of sesame seeds amounted to 155 thousand metric ton in 2016, at a value of EUR 216,000 thousand. Since 2012, imports suffered small fluctuations and peaked at 163 thousand metric ton in 2015.

In spite of small fluctuations, the 2012-2016 period saw an overall annual growth of around 4% in volume and value. Every major importing country in Europe reported an increase in import in this period.

International Price Fluctuations

The prices for sesame seeds have been following a fluctuating trend over the past few years. There is a price interdependency between the numerous global suppliers and therefore, the global market strongly rests on the annual volumes produced in both India and China.

Each year large quantities of sesame seeds are produced by China to meet the significant growing domestic demand for sesame seeds. Any postponement or failure in the Chinese crop lays a restriction on the global availability of sesame seeds, which in turn has an impact on price levels as well.

By the end of 2012, sesame seed prices had reached levels between USD 2,000 and USD 2,500 per metric ton, depending on the origin and quality of the seeds. This was followed by a steep drop in 2014 and 2015, with prices ranging between USD 1,200 and USD 1,500 per metric ton because of poor Chinese demand and good production levels worldwide.
