MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) _ Elliott Hatcher scored 17 points as Kansas State beat Iowa State 72-55 in the Big Eight opener for both teams Saturday night.
Iowa State (11-3, 0-1) hit just six field goals in the second half and Kansas State took advantage with an inside-outside punch.
The Cyclones hit the game’s first shot, but Kansas State took the lead just 1:27 into the game on a 3-point shot by Hatcher.
From there, the Wildcats (10-3, 1-0) never looked back, taking a 39-29 lead into the break.
Iowa State shot poorly in the second half, hitting just six of 29 shots from the field, none of them in the paint in part because of Kansas State’s shot-blocking ability.
Gerald Eaker blocked four of the Wildcats’ total of eight for the game, giving them 62 blocks on the season.
Cyclone Dedric Willoughby led all scorers with 19 pints, and Kelvin Cato pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
Hatcher led three Wildcats in double figures, with Paco May adding 13 and Tyrone Davis 10.
