REDRAWING AMERICA-REDISTRICTING LAWSUITS

As the 2019 state legislative sessions get underway, a busy year of legal battles also is beginning over lingering allegations that hundreds of electoral districts across the country were illegally drawn to the disadvantage of particular voters or political parties. First up was a court hearing Thursday in Virginia. Meanwhile, in an Arkansas case, federal judicial panel in August ruled that the publisher of the Little Rock Sun, a black community newspaper, did not have legal standing to bring a lawsuit alleging the boundaries of an eastern Arkansas congressional district were drawn to dilute the voting strength of black residents. DOG SHOT-DEPUTY FIRED

CONWAY, Ark. _ An Arkansas prosecutor is calling for the public to be patient and stop threatening local dispatchers after a sheriff’s deputy shot a Chihuahua dog while responding to a call about an animal attack. The Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office received more than 300 calls the day after the shooting, The Log Cabin Democrat reported . 250 words.

_ TROOPER SUSPENDED _ Arkansas State Police say the commander of a Criminal Investigation Division was suspended without pay for a week in December amid allegations of unbecoming conduct and using agents and inmates for personal work.

JONESBORO, Ark. _ Arkansas State coach Blake Anderson has added assistants Keith Heckendorf, Sean Coughlin and Malcolm Kelly to his staff. Kelly will be the outside wide receivers coach. The two-time All-Big 12 wide receiver at Oklahoma spent the last two seasons at Houston as an offensive graduate assistant coach and offensive analyst. SENT: 180 words.
