Golfing Policeman Suspended Without Pay
ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) _ A police officer accused of golfing in the nude at a department-sponsored outing has been suspended without pay by the Police-Fire Commission.
Officer Marlin ″Mongo″ Peterson, 30, was suspended Wednesday pending a commission hearing July 1 on a public indecency charge filed against him. He has pleaded innocent to the misdemeanor charge and is free on $1,000 bond awaiting an Aug. 15 pretrial hearing.
Police and civilian witnesses say Peterson played golf for about half an hour June 3 clad only in a shirt and golf shoes, according to Detective Chet Gaines. His foursome included a fellow officer.
Peterson appeared on Phil Donahue’s television talk show after he won the Rockford-Area Toughman All-Heavyweight Boxing Tournament in 1980 and competed in the national ″Mr. Toughman″ competition.
