Courtney Blades Tosses Perfect Game
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Courtney Blades threw a perfect game Thursday night and became the NCAA’s single-season and career victory leader as Southern Mississippi beat Arizona 1-0 at the Women’s College World Series.
Blades struck out 11 as Southern Miss upset the tournament’s No. 2 seed. She is 51-6 this season and 150-33 for her career. Debbie Nichols of Louisiana Tech held the NCAA single-season record with 50 victories in 1988, and held the career mark with 149 victories earned from 1987-90.
Blades went to a 3-2 count just three times and had only three balls hit out of the infield.
Erin Johnson drove in the game’s only run in the first inning.
Southern Miss (62-11) will play third-seeded Oklahoma on Friday. Oklahoma, making its first WCWS appearance, scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to beat California 2-1 before a tournament-record crowd of 6,856.
Jamie Clark hit her 23rd home run of the season and Rosie Leutzinger had a two-run double as top-ranked Washington (61-7) defeated DePaul 3-2.
Washington (61-7) advances to play Friday night against fourth-seeded UCLA, which beat Alabama 4-1.
In elimination games Saturday, Arizona (57-9) will play California (49-24) and Alabama (65-13) will play DePaul (40-21).
